Meet Our Providers: Dr. Yorvska Salazar

Dr. Yorvska Salazar of Bristow, Virginia, is the Health Center’s Behavioral Health Director. Dr. Salazar has years of hands-on clinical experience to help our patients manage issues ranging from anxiety and depression to substance abuse, trauma and major life transitions. She is skilled at working with children and adults as well as individuals and families.

Dr. Salazar said the Health Center focuses on “behavioral health” versus “mental health” by identifying unhealthy, dysfunctional habits, then helping a patient learn skills to become more functional and healthy. “Mental health looks at symptoms but behavioral health looks at functional behaviors, such as not going to work or lacking good parenting skills,” Salazar said. “We look at how their current behaviors are posing problems and how we can help turn that around.”

Our behavioral health service offers practical health benefits. For example, if you have been diagnosed with a chronic health problem like diabetes, our behavioral health team can help you learn behaviors and skills to manage your illness and its effects on your life. Patients who report anxiety or depression can be immediately screened by Dr. Salazar and provided with brief, behavioral-based counseling. Dr. Salazar and her team work closely with our primary care providers to design a treatment plan to meet your needs, including appropriate prescriptions.

Dr. Salazar received her Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University Washington, D.C. and most recently was a therapist for the City of Alexandria’s Community Services Board at the Adult Detention Center.

The Health Center accepts private insurance as well as Medicaid, Medicare and self pay on a sliding fee scale. Contact Dr. Salazar at 703-670-8872 if you would like to schedule an appointment or consultation.
